The Thriving Art Focused Community of Long Island City
Long Island City in Queens is home to a thriving art community with numerous art galleries, museums, sculpture parks, and other art related attractions and events in the area. This area is home to many spacious public and private community venues and Long Island City luxury rentals where art shows and events are held throughout the year.
It is widely considered as a top destination for art culture. A revitalized community centered on the arts
Long Island City was converted to a residential zone in 2001, and soon afterward the local modern arts culture started to develop and blossom. Many opportunities existed for older industrial buildings to be converted to beautifully reconstructed and redesigned structures that are now used for a wide range of different arts related purposes.
These revamped structures exist among several newly constructed venues like the Secret Theatre which is just a few blocks from MOMA’s PS1 – an extensive of the MOMA, and Silvercup Studios – a top production company housed in a revitalized industrial building. The mix of remodeled modern buildings, newly constructed venues, and relics of the area’s industrial past have created a remarkable and setting that gives the community a distinct character.
Several famous artists have made the area their home
With a quick tour of the local art venues and attractions in Long Island City, you’ll see that several of New York City’s finest and most famous artists have made the area their home at one point or another in their lives. Others travel to Long Island City to showcase their latest works. During the last years of Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi’s life, he transformed a photogravure plant across the street from his Long Island City studio into the popular Noguchi Museum.
The Socrates Sculpture park is graced by the incredible steel sculptures of Mark DiSuvero. The Queens waterfront features the largest waterfront sculpture park with constantly rotating exhibits from the world’s foremost sculptors.
